Fiona McManus publishes Master’s research on chronic low back pain

Congratulations to MISCH biostatistician Fiona McManus, lead author of a recent publication stemming from her Master’s research.

The paper, titled “Does Pain Self-Efficacy Influence Initial Forward Bending in Adults with Chronic Low Back Pain following Exercise?”, was published in the International Journal of Sports Physical Therapy (Vol. 20, Issue 11, 2025). It explores how psychological confidence in performing daily tasks may influence early-phase bending mechanics in individuals living with chronic low back pain.

The study focused on adults aged 18–65 with moderate-to-severe chronic low back pain (lasting at least three months) who had not undergone spinal or lower limb surgery. Participants completed a 12-week supervised physiotherapy exercise program, consisting of twice-weekly one-on-one sessions. The intervention included global and isolated machine-based strengthening, with or without neuromuscular control training.
